OVERVIEW
Fixed braces, also known as traditional orthodontics, offer a system for straightening teeth suitable for both adults and children. This involves brackets (tiny squares) temporarily bonded onto your teeth, with a wire threaded through them. These braces can be ceramic (white) or metal.

Stage 3 - Follow UpStage 1 - ConsultationDuring your initial consultation, your dentist will determine your suitability for this treatment and take the time to answer any questions you may have.
Stage 2 - TreatmentClinical records – In this session, we will collect a comprehensive set of records that include x-rays, photographs and a 3D scan of your dentition.
Braces fit – In this session, your braces will be fitted! This is typically a quick and comfortable procedure.
Review – Your progress will be monitored every 4-6 weeks, during which we will make adjustments to your braces as your teeth align progressively.
Braces off – Once we are satisfied with the alignment of your teeth, your braces will be taken off, and you’ll be provided with retainers.
Stage 3 - Follow UpOnce you have finished treatment, you’ll be given a set of retainers to ensure your teeth do not move back.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
While most individuals can undergo orthodontic treatment, braces may not always be the ideal option for everyone. Alternatives like Invisalign might be better suited in certain cases. Our decision is based on your individual preferences and what would serve you best.
The initial weeks may bring mild discomfort as you adjust to the new presence in your mouth. The brace might feel sharp and your teeth may feel slightly sore as they begin to shift, but this sensation usually subsides quickly. Following adjustment appointments, you might experience a similar soreness for a couple of days.
Metal braces don’t stain, but white braces can. The clear elastic bands surrounding each bracket on your tooth can become stained by certain types of food, like curry, so it’s wise to be cautious with such foods.
Anytime teeth are moved, they tend to gravitate back to their original position, making retainers crucial. We typically recommend clear plastic ones, known as Essix retainers.
It takes around 6-7 months for the bone to adjust to the new position, so we advise wearing your retainers full-time for this initial period. For the next six months, you would wear them for 12 hours a day (evenings and overnight), and after the first year, you would wear them at night indefinitely, or as long as you wish to maintain your straight teeth! We typically advise getting a new set of retainers every 12 months.
No need to worry! With our state-of-the-art Itero Invisalign scanner, we can take a scan and create a digital 3D model of your teeth. These models serve as our records before we start, during treatment, and at the end for your retainers.
Treatment durations can greatly vary, and Six Month Smiles is a brand of short-term adult braces. While we are certified providers of this treatment and Quick Straight Teeth, we also have training in more comprehensive options. Please note, we are not orthodontic experts.
