OVERVIEW

DENTAL BRIDGES

A dental bridge is an appliance that is permanently fitted into the mouth to replace a missing tooth or missing teeth. It is fixed into the mouth by attaching to the tooth/teeth on either side of the gap where a tooth has been lost. There are numerous types of dental bridges available at our clinic in Loughborough, and the procedure will vary depending on the type selected.

Permanent dental bridges are renowned for being a natural and comfortable option to replace teeth. However, it should be noted that, unlike a dental implant, the process usually requires the preparation of other teeth so it can be more destructive, carrying additional risk.

Dental Bridges FAQs

A dental bridge can vary in length, material and attachment type.

  • Cantilever bridge – This is where a single tooth is replaced using the adjacent tooth as support.
  • Conventional bridge – This is where a single tooth, or several teeth, are replaced using the support of teeth on either side of the gap.
  • Minimal prep (adhesive or Maryland) bridge – this involves very little, or no, preparation of supporting teeth. The bridge is bonded onto the supporting teeth using a wing (often metal).
Bridges can be made from numerous materials such as porcelain, metal, Emax or Zirconia. All options have advantages and disadvantages. These will be discussed with you before treatment begins.
