OVERVIEW
A sinus lift, or augmentation is a procedure where bone is added between the jaw and maxillary sinus, in your upper jaw, to create room for a dental implant. It is needed where there is not enough bone height in the jaw, or the floor of the sinuses are too close to where the implants would be placed.
This procedure must be carefully planned using the information gained during the consultation, as well as the x-rays and CT scans that are taken. These scans will allow Dr. Ravi to accurately measure the height and width of your existing bone and to evaluate the health of your sinus.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
During your consultation, your dentist will assess your suitability for a sinus lift procedure, answering any questions you may have.
During this procedure the dentist would make a small crack in the gum tissue where the teeth used to be. The tissue will be raised which would expose the bone, and a small window is opened in the bone. The membrane lining the sinus on the other side of the window separates your sinus from the drawer, and this membrane is gently pushed out and away from the jaw.
Granules of bone graft materials are then packed into that space where the sinus was. The amount of bone will vary but usually several millimetres of bone is added above the jaw.
Your implant can usually be placed at the same time as the sinus lift and bone graft is performed, reducing the need for further surgeries. This does however require longer healing time (6-9 months) before a definitive restoration is placed.
After the procedure, you may have some swelling of the area. You may bleed from your mouth or even your nose. Do not blow your nose or sneeze forcefully. Either one could cause the bone graft material to move, and loosen the stitches.
Dr Ravi may give you saline sprays to keep the inner lining of your nose wet and prescribe medicine to prevent congestion and inflammation, as well as pain relief, antibitiocs and an antimicrobial mouthwash to prevent infecgion. Most patients have noly a little discomfort after a sinus lift procedure.
You will be seen after 7-10 days where everything will be assessed and stitches removed, sometimes a further review will be required.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
A sinus lift is needed when there is not enough bone height in the jaw, or the floor of the sinuses is too close to where the implants would be placed. There are many reasons why this occurs such as:
Dental implants have a very high success rate, as long as they are cared for properly. You will be shown how to clean around your implant, and we would also advise regular appointments with our hygienist to ensure this is done as effectively as possible.
We recommend you brush your teeth twice a day, ideally using an electric toothbrush, and always clean in between your teeth and around your dental implant with floss or interdental brushes.
We recommend you visit us twice a year. During this appointment, your dentist will check the health of the implant.
