OVERVIEW

SINUS LIFT, LOUGHBOROUGH

A sinus lift, or augmentation is a procedure where bone is added between the jaw and maxillary sinus, in your upper jaw, to create room for a dental implant.  It is needed where there is not enough bone height in the jaw, or the floor of the sinuses are too close to where the implants would be placed.

This procedure must be carefully planned using the information gained during the consultation, as well as the x-rays and CT scans that are taken. These scans will allow Dr. Ravi to accurately measure the height and width of your existing bone and to evaluate the health of your sinus.

QUESTIONS ABOUT

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is needed when there is not enough bone height in the jaw, or the floor of the sinuses is too close to where the implants would be placed. There are many reasons why this occurs such as:

  • It has been a long time since teeth have been lost – once a tooth is lost, bone starts to be resorbed (absorbed back into the body). This process continues over time, so the longer the gap is present, the more bone is reduced.
  • Previous gum disease – gum disease causes bone loss around the teeth, which can then lead to tooth loss but there is a significant reduction in bone levels
  • Individual anatomy such as large sinuses, less bone present
  • Chronic infection – a tooth which has been infected for a long time but not treated through root canal treatment or extraction, the infection will continue to eat away at the bone causing a loss of bone level and density.
There are risks involved with sinus lift procedure, which will be fully explained to you by Dr Ravi. We work together with the patient to reduce the risks and make the treatment as comfortable as possible for you.

Dental implants have a very high success rate, as long as they are cared for properly. You will be shown how to clean around your implant, and we would also advise regular appointments with our hygienist to ensure this is done as effectively as possible.

We recommend you brush your teeth twice a day, ideally using an electric toothbrush, and always clean in between your teeth and around your dental implant with floss or interdental brushes.

We recommend you visit us twice a year. During this appointment, your dentist will check the health of the implant.
