OVERVIEW
Retainers are used at the end of orthodontic treatment to hold the teeth in their new position.
Whenever you move teeth, they will have a tendency to move back to their original position. This is why retainers are SO important. There are different types available, however, at Lux Dental, we usually recommend Essix retainers.
We can also provide a fixed retainer, which is a wire placed discreetly behind your teeth. This option has its own set of pros and cons, which we will thoroughly discuss with you. If you decide to proceed with a fixed retainer, it’s crucial that you continue wearing your Essix retainer as well!
QUESTIONS ABOUT
You will need to wear your retainers for life, or as long as you want your teeth to remain straight! We usually recommend replacing your retainers every 12 months.
It takes 6-7 months for the bone to form in the new position, so we ask you to wear your retainers full-time for this initial period. For the next 6 months, you would wear them for 12 hours a day (evenings and overnight) and after the first year you wear them at night.
provides its own set of retainers, called Vivera retainers. These are super high quality, and, when you choose this option, you receive 3 sets of retainers. These will last you several years but still need to be replaced as the plastic can distort.
