OVERVIEW

DENTAL DENTURES

Dental dentures are typically crafted to replace multiple missing teeth. They can be made from acrylic or include metal components. Modern dentures are designed to look very natural and are generally comfortable for the patient to wear. However, it is important to note that dentures are not permanently fixed in place. Instead, they rest on the gums and sometimes attach to adjacent teeth for support.

QUESTIONS ABOUT

DENTURES IN LOUGHBOROUGH

It is important to always remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to ‘breathe’, which helps prevent infections in the mouth. When not in use, dental dentures should be kept wet, by leaving them in cold water overnight. Both dentures and remaining teeth should be brushed daily. Additionally, denture cleaner tablets (such as Steradent) can be used.
  • Acrylic dentures – these dentures are entirely made of plastic and are held in place by suction.
  • Cobalt-chromium dentures – feature a lightweight metal framework, which improves the retention and comfort of the denture.
  • Flexible dentures (Valplast dentures) – made from a flexible material, these dentures provide greater comfort and retention than acrylic dentures. They are also thinner and less bulky.
  • Implant retained denturesdental implants can be used to secure these dentures, allowing for less acrylic to be used. This makes the dentures lighter and more comfortable, and they clip into place, providing greater security and stability when eating.
