OVERVIEW

DENTURES

Dentures are usually made to replace several missing teeth. They can be made from acrylic or can also have metal parts to them. They can be made to look very natural and in most cases are comfortable for the patient to wear, but it important to note that they are not fixed in and are held in by resting on to the gum, and sometimes to adjacent teeth.

QUESTIONS ABOUT

THIS TREATMENT

It is important to always remove your dentures at night and allow your gum to ‘breathe’. This helps to prevent any infections from developing in the mouth. They should be kept wet when not in the mouth, so sometimes are left in some cold water overnight. The denture and remaining teeth should be brushed daily, and denture cleaner tablets (such as Steradent) can be used.

  • Acrylic dentures – these are entirely made of plastic and are held in by suction
  • Cobalt-chromium dentures – these have a lightweight metal framework which improves the retention and comfort of the denture
  • Flexible dentures (Valplast dentures) – these are flexible dentures with increased levels of comfort and retention compared with acrylic dentures. They are thinner and less bulky
  • Implant retained dentures – dental implants can be used to retain dentures. These allow less acrylic to be used, making the dentures much more light weight and comfortable, whilst also allowing them to clip into place making them more secure and less mobile when eating
