OVERVIEW
A sinus lift, alternatively referred to as sinus augmentation, is a process involving the integration of bone between your jaw and the maxillary sinus in your upper jaw. This step is crucial when there is inadequate bone height in the jaw, or if the sinuses’ base is too close to the intended area for implant insertion.
Dr Ravi attentively organises this procedure using data gathered during the initial consultation and from the x-rays and CT scans conducted. These imaging methods allow for exact measurement of your existing bone’s height and width and an exhaustive evaluation of your sinus health.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
During your consultation, your dentist will ascertain your suitability for this procedure and will be more than happy to answer any queries you may hold.
In this procedure, the dentist will create a minor cut in the gum tissue where the teeth used to be. This cut allows for lifting the tissue to reveal the bone, on which a tiny window is created. The membrane lining the sinus, situated on the other side of the window, is gently lifted and distanced from the jaw.
Following this, fragments of bone graft material are filled into the space formerly filled by the sinus. The volume of bone incorporated can vary, but generally, several millimetres of bone is added above the jaw.
Typically, the dental implant placement coincides with the sinus lift and bone grafting, lessening the need for future surgeries. However, this method necessitates a more prolonged recovery period (6-9 months) before a definitive restoration can be affixed.
Post-procedure, you may observe some swelling in the treated area and potential bleeding from your mouth or nose. Refrain from blowing your nose or sneezing vigorously as these actions could displace the bone graft material and loosen the stitches.
Dr Ravi may provide saline sprays to keep your nasal lining moist and prescribe medications to reduce congestion and inflammation. Additionally, pain relief, antibiotics, and an antimicrobial mouth rinse may be suggested to ward off potential infections. Most patients report minimal discomfort following a sinus lift procedure.
A follow-up appointment will be booked after 7-10 days to assess the area and remove stitches. Sometimes, an additional review may be necessary.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
This procedure becomes necessary when there’s insufficient bone height in the jaw or the sinus floor is too proximate to the proposed implant site. Several factors contribute to these conditions, including:
This procedure carries certain risks, which Dr Ravi will thoroughly explain. We strive to collaborate with our patients to minimise these risks and ensure your comfort during treatment.
Dental implants have a high success rate provided they receive proper care. You’ll be instructed on how to clean around your implant, and we strongly endorse regular appointments with our hygienist to optimise cleaning effectiveness.
It’s recommended that you brush your teeth twice daily, preferably using an electric toothbrush, and consistently clean between your teeth and around your dental implant with floss or interdental brushes.
We recommend routine visits to our clinic, typically twice a year, where your dentist will assess the health of your implant.
