OVERVIEW
Retainers are instrumental in conserving the end result of orthodontic procedures, such as fixed braces or Invisalign, by guaranteeing your teeth stay in their corrected position.
The reality is that teeth instinctively aim to revert to their previous positions post-movement. Therefore, the function of retainers is imperative and simply can’t be emphasised enough. We regularly recommend the Essix retainers, which are transparent plastic devices.
We also propose fixed retainers, consisting of a wire attached to the rear of your teeth. This approach brings its own set of pros and cons, which we will thoroughly discuss with you. If you choose to go for a fixed retainer, we strongly advocate the simultaneous use of your removable Essix retainer!
QUESTIONS ABOUT
The straightforward answer is indefinitely, or for as long as you wish to retain your straightened teeth. It is generally recommended to get a new pair of retainers crafted every 12 months.
The restructuring of bone around the newly positioned teeth takes roughly 6-7 months, so we advise wearing your retainers full-time during this initial phase. Afterwards, for the subsequent six months, we recommend wearing them for 12 hours a day (during the evenings and overnight). Post the first year, wearing them nightly is usually sufficient.
Invisalign provides their own range of retainers, named Vivera retainers. These are of exceptional quality, and opting for this choice means you receive 3 sets of retainers. These retainers can last several years but will ultimately need to be replaced as the plastic may warp over time.
