OVERVIEW
Retainers play a crucial role in preserving the final result of orthodontic treatments, such as fixed braces or Invisalign, by ensuring your teeth remain in their corrected alignment.
It’s a fact that teeth naturally attempt to return to their former positions after being moved. Hence, the role of retainers is vital and simply cannot be overstated. We commonly recommend the Essix retainers, which are clear plastic appliances.
We also offer fixed retainers, composed of a wire secured to the back of your teeth. This method carries its own set of advantages and disadvantages, which we will fully discuss with you. In case you decide to opt for a fixed retainer, we highly encourage the concurrent use of your removable Essix retainer!
QUESTIONS ABOUT
The simple answer is indefinitely, or for as long as you desire to maintain your straightened teeth. It is typically advisable to have a new pair of retainers fabricated every 12 months.
Bone restructuring around the newly positioned teeth takes about 6-7 months, so we recommend wearing your retainers round the clock during this initial period. Following this, for the next six months, we suggest wearing them for 12 hours a day (during the evenings and overnight). After the first year, nightly wear is generally sufficient.
Invisalign offers their own brand of retainers, known as Vivera retainers. These are of exceptional quality, and choosing this option means you receive 3 sets of retainers. These retainers can last several years but will eventually need to be replaced as the plastic may distort over time.
