OVERVIEW
Dermal fillers are a good option for improving and refilling reduced volume in many parts of your face and neck. Areas we often work with include the cheeks, jawline, chin, lips, and more.
As we grow older, it’s natural for our midface area to lose some of its fullness, which can result in sagging, especially in the ‘jowl’ area. A good first step to combat this is adding some filler into the cheek area, providing an instant and pleasing lift!
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
In our clinic, the first step is gaining a complete understanding of your health history. It’s a crucial part of our process, allowing us to decide if this treatment is the right fit for you. Strictly following a thorough consent process is an essential part of how we operate.
Local anaesthesia – Depending on the area being treated, we often use a small dose of local anaesthetic to make the cannula entry as painless as possible for you.
Application of dermal filler – How we apply the dermal filler depends on the area being treated. We use either a needle or a cannula for the procedure.
Massage – After the filler is injected, we lightly massage the area. This step is important for ensuring the filler integrates smoothly and doesn’t cause any lumpiness.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
Fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in our skin. Over time, our bodies break down this substance, meaning the filler will also naturally break down. When injected, it boosts and hydrates the skin, helping to restore lost volume and structure, changes we commonly see with ageing. Some fillers also contain local anaesthetic.
Not when we’re in charge! For areas that are typically more sensitive, we use dental blocks with anaesthetic to ensure your comfort. Some areas experience very little discomfort.
Any procedure has inherent risks, especially if not done safely. The main risk with fillers involves injecting into a blood vessel. Since fillers are a gel, if it gets into a vessel, it can block it or allow the filler to move around blood vessels causing blockages elsewhere. If this happens, the filler must be immediately dissolved, and we always have the dissolving agent on hand. To minimise this risk, we apply our filler using a cannula. It’s a blunt needle, introduced through a small entry point in the skin. This method is safer for injecting any filler compared to using a needle and significantly reduces the risk of serious complications.
The main side effects are bruising and swelling. How much you experience will vary, but typically these symptoms go away within a few days.
How long the filler lasts depends on where it’s applied. Filler in the jawline and cheek can last up to a year, whereas filler in the nose to mouth lines or lips usually lasts between 6-9 months.
We usually start with a minimum of 1ml, or 1 syringe, of filler for facial treatments. Often, you may need more than this, and sometimes, we may use 2ml in the first session. We can add more once the filler has settled, if you feel you need more.
