OVERVIEW
Crowns are a protective covering that go over a tooth and are needed in a number of scenarios. They can be made out of different materials depending on what is appropriate and what the patients preference is.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
During your consultation or check-up, your dentist will inform you whether or not this treatment is necessary, and talk you through any questions you may have.
This treatment requires a minimum of 2 appointments to be completed. The tooth is usually numbed first using local anaesthetic. The dentist will then prepare the tooth on the first appointment and will take impressions (moulds) of your teeth to send to the laboratory. Usually a temporary crown or covering will be placed over the tooth to protect it.
The technician at the lab will use the impressions to make a custom fitted crown, unique to each patient, which will fit perfectly over your tooth. If a white crown is chosen, this will also be matched to the shade of your natural tooth.
On your second appointment, the dentist will try the crown in and ensure it is comfortable in your bite and fits perfectly. If this is the case, it will be cemented in.
Sometimes crowns require some adjustment after they are fitted. We ask all our patients to contact us if they feel it is not settled after a couple of weeks and we will make an appointment to assess this.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
Crowns can be recommended by your dentist in any of the following situations:
Crowns can be made from different materials. Those that are made from non-precious metals or precious metals such as gold are not tooth coloured. We do, however, tend to offer white or tooth coloured crowns.
These can be made from porcelain, emax and zirconia, and the colour chosen will be checked by the dentist and matched to your natural teeth.
