OVERVIEW
Dental crowns serve as a safeguarding cover that encircles a tooth and are utilised in various circumstances. The material chosen for the crown is subject to the distinct needs of the patient and the dentist’s counsel.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
During your regular dental check-up or consultation, your dentist will assess if this procedure is a requisite for you. This dialogue will give you the chance to voice any queries or concerns you may have.
Finalising this procedure generally demands at least two appointments. The initial step usually involves administering local anaesthesia to the tooth. At the first appointment, the dentist readies the tooth and takes impressions of your teeth, which are then forwarded to the laboratory. Often, a provisional crown or cover is placed over the tooth to shield it.
The laboratory technician utilises these impressions to construct a custom-made crown, which is exclusive to each patient and perfectly fits over the tooth. If a white crown is chosen, it will be harmonised with the shade of your existing teeth.
During your subsequent appointment, the dentist will position the crown, ensuring it is comfortable and correctly aligned with your bite. If everything fits perfectly, the crown will be permanently cemented.
Sometimes, crowns may require some adjustments post their fitting. We urge all our patients to contact us if they notice any discomfort or imbalance even after a few weeks. We will promptly schedule an appointment to examine and rectify as necessary.
QUESTIONS ABOUT
Your dentist may recommend a dental crown in the following scenarios:
Dental crowns can be manufactured from various materials. Crowns constructed from non-precious metals or precious metals such as gold are not tooth-coloured. However, we typically furnish crowns that are white or match your tooth’s colour.
These tooth-coloured crowns can be made from materials such as porcelain, emax, and zirconia. The shade of the crown will be painstakingly selected by the dentist to blend with your natural teeth.
